Everything about JNU entrance exam

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is a prestigious educational institution that came into existence in 1969, under the Jawaharlal Nehru University Act 1966, (53 of 1966). Admission to JNU is on the basis of performance in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examination (JNUEE), an all-India entrance test conducted by the NTA (National Testing Agency). 

Admission to various undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil and PhD courses is through JNUEE conducted by NTA as a computer-based test, that is, in online mode. The test can comprise objective and subjective question (one or both) depending on the programme applied for – structure, pattern and marking also differ as per this. Negative marking will apply for objective questions only. 

Students must check and fulfil the eligibility criteria for the respective programme(s) that they wish to enrol in before applying – in case the student is found to not fulfil the criteria, their candidature for the JNUEE stands cancelled. These eligibility criteria (for 10 undergraduate and 37 postgraduate programmes at JNU) are available on the JNU website. There is a minimum age requirement only for the B.A. (Hons) programme – one must be a minimum of 17 years of age as of October 1, 2020, to apply. There is no age bar for any other programme.

For M.Phil. and PhD programmes, the final selection is done considering both the computer-based test (CBT) and Viva Voce (that happens after the CBT) – with 70% weightage to the test score and 30% to the Viva Voce. for all other programmes, the computer-based test is the final and only metric for selection.

The application process is as follows:

1. Online registration – Register with your phone and email ID to generate an application number and password
2. Fill details – Fill in your personal and academic details (after verifying that you are eligible for the courses that you are applying for) along with preferences for exam centres (you can submit up to four preferences and the NTA does not guarantee the provision of top preference) and courses that you are applying for (a candidate can apply for a maximum of three programmes)
3. Upload photo and signature with other scanned documents – signature should be in blue or black ink on a white paper and all documents must be in required format within the size limit.
4. Fee Payment – Fee payment can be done through Net Banking, Debit Card, Credit Card, UPI (Unified Payments Interface) or PayTM Wallet. 
5. Submission and Confirmation – Once payment has been confirmed, review the details filled, edit if necessary and submit the application form. Even though these documents are not asked for by any test centre or admission authorities, it is strongly advised that the student prints out a copy of the fee payment receipt and the filled form once it is submitted.

The exam pattern for JNUEE varies with the programme you apply for, but the online computer-based test lasts for 3 hours and is held at an NTA verified centre. NTA will also open up practice test centres to allow students to get used to this mode of examination to prevent any difficulties for them on the examination day.

The most suitable method to study for JNUEE is to go through the syllabus and learn everything at least once, along with solving past year papers, test series and practice papers. These are available through various official sources. 

The results for JNUEE will be declared in a percentile format with normalisation in case the test for a particular programme is conducted across multiple shifts/ testing sessions. Cutoffs will vary depending on collective performance in this computer-based test.
